What is Therapy?Therapy is not advice but is an effective way of helping you manage the pressures and stresses of life. It can help you feel better about yourself and as a consequence, it can have a beneficial effect on all your relationships:- self, partner, family, friends, children, work colleagues, which in turn will enable you achieve a better life/work balance. However, one of the most confusing things about psychotherapy is how many different types there are. And finding out which therapy is suited to you can be just as anxiety provoking as embarking upon therapy itself. However, for the most part they centre around finding ways to change destructive feelings, thoughts and behaviour that generally stop you from getting on in life. For example, all three styles of therapy listed below interact with each other, and each approach has it's own merit. Which psychotherapy does Therapy In Motion offer? Therapy In Motion specialises in the psychodynamic model of counselling and psychotherapy to help you understand how your earlier life experiences may be clouding your present day judgements and contributing to your current distress, affecting your current life's decisions, and influencing the way you relate to other people and indeed yourself. But despite the preferred emphasis, all three approaches may be used to help you to a degree at some point. How does therapy work? In a confidential and impartial setting, seated opposite the therapist, you are encouraged to talk and reflect on any concerns (feelings, thoughts and behaviours) you have in your life, which will help you to recognise your strengths, pitfalls and any repeating tendencies which may be the root of the problems, so you can use your strengths to make positive changes in your life. Any unconscious patterns that may have evolved over time in your life are explored, as well as memories, dreams, and other early relationships. These are all used to try and understand current difficulties you may be facing in life. Some people may initially find it difficult to express their feelings, but it does become easier. Also what you tell your therapist is up to you; you will not be pushed to say more than you feel comfortable with. And by building a trusting relationship both you and the therapist aim to explore issues more deeply in order for you to change any unhelpful patterns of relating. Change will begin to occur as you become more aware of your unconscious patterns of behaviour, defence mechanisms and rules by which you have inherently been living your life. Through this awareness you begin to gain insight to the patterns thus enabling you to take control and make appropriate changes in your life. The model that Therapy In Motion errs towards does not rely on any one technique or theory (e.g. Freud, Jung, Klein, etc) but uses a combination of techniques that are suitable for you and your way of being. Does therapy take a long time? Therapy In Motion offers both short term and open-ended work depending on your needs, which we discuss during our initial meeting. The aim is to be there for you at every challenging stage of your life; and since therapy is a very personal thing it is important that you feel comfortable, therefore ending therapy can be discussed at any time. (However, as most difficulties and problems do not occur suddenly, it may take time working together to deal with them. Also, building a trusting relationship between you and your therapist and developing lasting changes in your life which can endure stressful situations does not happen overnight and could take several months to achieve.) Sessions are 50 minutes long, once or twice per week, on the same day and at the same time every week. Everything discussed is confidential between you and the therapist. ![]() Did you know... ~ Depression affects 1 in 5 older people living in the community and 2 in 5 living in care homes ~ About 10% of children have a mental health problem at any one time ~ The UK has one of the highest rates of self harm in Europe, at 400 per 100,000 population ~ Only one in 10 prisoners has no mental disorder. - - - - - - - - - - Back to top.
